About me
My story
I am Debbie Apter, a licensed clinical social worker with a private practice in counseling and psychotherapy for 38 years in Rochester, NY. With a Bachelor in Education from NYU and a Masters in Social Work from Syracuse University, I bring a well-rounded and educational approach to my work with clients.
After 8 years as a clinical social worker at Hillside Children’s Center, I moved on to a full-time faculty position at Monroe Community College, where I spent 17 years in the Human Services Career Program. I have also acted as a clinical consultant and trainer to numerous agencies and professionals, sharing my passion for helping others.
I specialize in helping individuals build skills in treating depression and anxiety, as well as working with people who want to change their relationship with food. By using mindful eating as a daily practice, I can help you ditch diets and learn to listen to your body. My programs and groups are available to the general public and fellow professionals who want to help their clients have a better relationship with food.
How I can support you
With a focus on personalized care, I work with each client to identify their unique needs and goals, and develop a tailored treatment plan that addresses their specific concerns. Whether you’re seeking help with managing feelings of stress and worry, overcoming unhealthy eating habits, navigating life changes, or improving your relationships, I’m here to support you every step of the way by tailoring the approach according to your needs. Some possible approaches might be:
During a hypnotherapy session, a trained therapist guides you into a state of deep relaxation and heightened suggestibility, allowing you to focus on specific goals and intentions.
During an EMDR session, a trained therapist guides you to recall the traumatic memory while simultaneously engaging in a form of bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, sounds, or taps. This process can help the brain process the traumatic memory in a new and less distressing way, reducing the symptoms of conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. EMDR therapy has been widely studied and is recognized as an effective treatment for trauma-related conditions.
